Prime Minister criticized how Gishwati protection measures are being implemented PDF Print E-mail

On the evening of 17th September 2009, Prime Minister Bernard MAKUZA while visiting the Bigogwe Sector inspected a settlement site for people leaving some Gishwati hills which are not fit for settlement or agriculture. This was one of a set of measures adopted by conservationists to protect the environment in general and the Gishwati forest in particular by preventing disasters often caused by human activities which antagonize the environment. Still fresh in mind are the 2007 disasters which caused the death of more than 20 people and destruction of property.

Some 298 households were found to live in a very high risk zone and should therefore be moved quickly before 30/10/2009. The Prime Minister was not happy with the situation as two months had elapsed since the concerned people were notified their resettlement decision but had only demarcated building plots. He called on Nyabihu District leaders to better manage the situation with less words and more action before he returns to reassess them soon.
