“Government will continue to provide seeds and fertilizers to farmers,” PM Ngirente says
Prime Minister Dr Ngirente Edouard promised farmers that the government of Rwanda will continue to provide them with subsidies mainly on seeds including maize, wheat, and soya.
The Premier made this pledge while officially launching the agriculture season 2020A at the national level. This launch took place in Buyoga Sector of Rulindo District, Northern Province on September 24, 2019.
In his address after launching the season, he emphasized on the importance of agriculture in the Rwandan economy and revealed that the Agricultural growth increased to 5 per cent in the second quarter of 2019 from 4 per cent in the previous quarter.
The Prime Minister urged the farmers to sustain land use consolidation, use improved seeds and fertilizers, as well as ensure effective farm management as key drivers of the agriculture sector growth.
“The Government is committed to keep on promoting the agriculture sector. Therefore, I call upon all farmers to register themselves in the Smart Nkunganire System to easily get agricultural inputs subsidized by the government,” he added.
The launch of agriculture season 2020A was part of a two-day working visit in the Northern Province. The Prime Minister kicked off his tour by visiting various development projects in Burera District. The visited sites include Rwerere research Station, Rusarabuye TVET, Butaro hospital, Burera Beach Resort Hotel, Burera Diary, Burera College of Trade and SPF Ikigega.
On his second day, the Premier was in Rulindo District where he visited the Early Childhood Development Centre in Base Sector. The Prime Minister also visited Stevia Life Sweeteners Ltd, a company that grows stevia crops for export. This project was given 80 Ha of land by the Government as an incentive to boost agriculture export.
Later in the day, the Premier visited Kinini Poultry Project that rear 46000 chickens with a daily production of 30,000 eggs that are sold on the local market and in neighbouring DRC. He then concluded his visit at SINA Gerard's Entreprise Urwibutso, whereby he toured the industry and witnessed different stages of wine production.
All along this visit, the Premier was accompanied by several high officials including Ministers of Agriculture, Trade, Education and Cabinet Affairs, Director Generals, the Governor of the Northern Province, as well as other local authorities both in Burera and Rulindo District.
