PM Murekezi urges Christians to uphold unity and reconciliation

Nyamagabe, 1 June 2017

Christians must continue to uphold unity and reconciliation among Rwandans and fight against whatever can instigate divisions among Rwandans.

Prime Minister Anastase Murekezi made the statement at the celebration of Gikongoro Diocese’s silver jubilee and 25th anniversary of its Bishop ordination to the priesthood.

Prime Minister Murekezi commended the Catholic Church for its great contribution towards the country’s development in the areas of education, health and socio-economic sectors.

Commenting on the collaboration between the Government and the Catholic Church and other churches, Prime Minister said:

“The Government of Rwanda has committed itself to collaborating with the Catholic Church and other churches in the areas of community-based health insurance, one cow per poor family/Girinka, TVET, potable water, hygiene, modern agriculture and livestock as well as saving schemes, in order to promote Rwandans welfare”. Said the Prime Minister.

He reminded Christians that the silver jubilee is a golden opportunity to look back and celebrate their successes while reflecting on failures; ask for forgiveness from God and people and take action to rectify them.

The Head of Government urged Christians to embrace Ndi Umunyarwanda program initiated by the Government of Rwanda to boost unity and reconciliation among Rwandans.

The Premier expressed his gratitude to Mgr Célestin Hakizimana for his love, especially towards people who sought refuge at Saint Paul National Pastoral Centre during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

The Gikongoro Diocese, which marked its silver jubilee, was founded by Pope Saint John Paul II who visited Rwanda in 1992.
