PM Ngirente encourages nations to phase-out warming gases

Nairobi, Kenya |14 March 2019:

Today the Rt.Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Edouard Ngirente attended the 4th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi. In his statement, he reminded how the climate change is already affecting our societies:

“We are gathered here today at a critical time in the humanity’s relationship with nature. Never before have the pressures on our environment been greater. In many parts of the world, climate change is already affecting our societies. Economies and ecosystems are struggling to keep up with the rate of warming.”

The Premier urged participants, at the Nairobi Assembly on environment, to deeply define a new development model that is clean, green and climate-friendly in order to complement other existing global strategies and commitments to address climate change.

He further encouraged all Member States that have not yet ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol that aims at phasing out the use of potent warming gases by more than 80% over the next 30 years to do so as it will fast-track the phase-out of these gases, and strengthen global climate action.

The Premier also called upon all nations to always remember that their common goal should be the creation of a zero waste society that will both address environmental issues, boost economic growth and job creation.

He finally reiterated that Rwanda’s commitment to promoting sustainable management of the environment and natural resources and respecting its international obligations as we transition towards a green economy.
