PM Ngirente officially opened the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa 2025
Kigali, June 30, 2025---On behalf of His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, Prime Minister Dr. Edouard Ngirente, officially opened the inaugural Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA 2025).
This two-day Summit held under the theme: “The Potential of Small Modular and Micro Reactors in Accelerating Africa's Energy Transition” took place in Kigali Convention Center (KCC).
In his keynote address, Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need for collaborative efforts among African leaders to adopt innovative and clean energy solutions that will power Africa’s development agenda.
He highlighted the critical role of nuclear energy as a sustainable, low-carbon option capable to support Africa’s long-term energy security and climate resilience.
The Premier also revealed Rwanda’s ambitious plan to increase the electricity generation, from the current 1 Gigawatt to an estimated 5 Gigawatts through nuclear energy by 2050 to meet the country’s growing energy demand and support the Vision 2050 development goals.
He called on African leaders and other key actors to turn Africa’s energy challenges into opportunities, by creating enabling environments for nuclear technologies to advance inclusive growth across the continent.
