Premier Ngirente launches Forest Planting Season
Nyagatare, 28 October 2017 - Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente has reiterated the importance of forests in the betterment of lives.
The Premier made the call this Saturday while officiating at the launch of the Forest Planting Season in Nyagatare District. The event was marked by community work, Umuganda. Nyagatare residents were joined by senior government officials to plant trees.
Prime Minister Ngirente elaborated on the importance of forests for human survival, from the air that humans breathe to the wood they use.
"We celebrate this day to reiterate the importance of forests in our lives, and its impact in enhancing environmental protection efforts. Forests help mitigate climate change," PM Ngirente explained, "and prevent soil erosion besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for us, humans." PM Ngirente said.
Throughout the Forest Planting Season, the Government of Rwanda will encourage citizens to invest in forestry and adopt alternative sources of energy - such as gas and solar - to help curb environment degradation.
Themed "Forests - a Pillar of Sustainable Development" the 2017/18 Forest Planting Season will see seedlings planted on more than 50,000 hectares countrywide.
