PRIME MINISTER NGIRENTE OFFICIATED THE 18TH EDITION OF KWITA IZINA BABY GORILLAS NAMING CEREMONY 

Musanze, September 2,2022-Prime Minister, Dr Edouard Ngirente represented H.E Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda at the 18th Edition of Kwita Izina baby gorillas naming ceremony. This ceremony took place in Kinigi, Musanze District.

During this ceremony, 20 baby gorillas and one newly formed gorilla family were named by various local and international guests as well as friends of Rwanda.

In his remarks, Prime Minister noted that naming baby gorillas is a demonstration of Rwanda’s commitment to conservation, given its importance in our country’s socio-economic transformation.

He highlighted the role of tourism revenue-sharing scheme as an  important part of Rwanda’s conservation strategy. In this regard, he stated that Rwanda protects its natural heritage by investing in the communities that surround our national parks.

The Premier also revealed that the Volcanoes National Park will be expanded to accommodate the growing number of gorillas, and improve their resilience to threats, including climate change. He mentioned that communities will benefit through new economic opportunities, increased tourism and job creation.

Prime Minister commended the rapid and successful response by the Government of Rwanda to the Covid-19 pandemic. He noted that this enabled the tourism sector, to quickly resume operations and safeguard jobs.

He finally thanked the local community and the namers for their efforts in conserving and protecting mountain gorillas and their habitat.
