PRIME MINISTER NGIRENTE OFFICIATED THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE AFRICA PROTECTED AREAS CONGRESS
Kigali, July 18, 2022- Prime Minister Dr. Edouard Ngirente officiated the opening ceremony of the inaugural Africa Protected Areas Congress that is taking place at the Kigali Convention Center from 18th- 23rd July 2022.
In his remarks, Prime Minister noted that the Government of Rwanda has made biodiversity conservation as one of its national priorities. He recalled that biodiversity conservation plays a key role in supporting our economic development through different sectors.
The Premier also referred to Nyandungu Eco-Tourism Park, that he had inaugurated early in the afternoon and highlighted how that urban wetland was transformed from a degraded wetland to an educational and recreational facility.
While sharing with participants some of Rwanda’s key milestones in conservation of environment, he revealed that Rwanda has achieved its target of more than 30% of national forest cover.
He concluded his remarks by calling upon African countries to increase investments in biodiversity and ecosystem services. In this regard, he insisted on the importance of public and private partnership in sustainably protecting, restoring and managing Africa’s rich biodiversity.
