PRIME MINISTER PRESENTED TO PARLIAMENT GOVERNMENT’S ACHIEVEMENTS ON TRADE WITH A FOCUS ON EXPORT PROMOTION

Kigali, 02 December 2022: As provided for by the Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda of 2003 revised in 2015 in its article 133, Prime Minister, Dr. Edouard Ngirente, presented to the Rwandan Parliament, both Chambers, Government of Rwanda’s actions related to achievements on trade with a focus on export promotion.

In his presentation, Prime Minister started by depicting the general image of the status of the global economy and trade.  He noted that the global economy is projected to grow by 6% in 2022 while the global merchandise trade volumes will grow by 3.5% in 2022.

The Premier also revealed that in 2022, Rwanda's economy is expected to grow at 6.8%.

He highlighted that in the first nine months of 2022, the value of Rwanda’s exports grew by 37.3% while the volume increased to 891.9 tons in 2022 from 738.1 tons in 2021, an increase of 21.2%.

While addressing the issue of Rwanda’s trade deficit, Prime Minister explained that it is not a big concern as most of the country’s imports are materials used as intermediate goods in the manufacturing industry.

Prime Minister also indicated various measures and strategies adopted by the Government of Rwanda to facilitate export promotion. He focused on the Manufacture and Build to Recover Programme and called on local manufacturers to tap into available opportunities in this program.

He concluded his presentation by urging Rwandans to double efforts to increase domestic food production. Particularly, he called upon youth to work hard and ensure that the set strategies are well implemented.
